The horse mackerel Megalaspis cordyla is a commercially important pelagic fish species in the Kerala coast. Megalaspis cordyla exhibits a food preference for fishes over crustaceans and cephalopods. The species has prolonged breeding season extending from May to January with a peak during May to June, as has also been evidenced by gonado-somatic index. The size of first maturity of both male and female was 270 mm. There was significant difference in the length weight regression co-efficient in the two sexes. Population parameters of horse mackerel occurring along the Kerala coast were estimated from length frequency data, by using FISAT computer program. The analysis gave the following Von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) parameters: the asymptotic length (L∞) = 451.5 mm, growth coefficient value (K) = 0.56/yr and age (to) = -0.00742. Based on these growth parameters, the growth performance indices Φ) 5.121 and Z/K = 2.013 ER -
